Yamoussoukro Basilica:
Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the long serving president of Côte d'Ivoire, built a massive church in the style of the Vatican's St Peter's Basilica; on the outskirts of his mother's village, Yamoussoukro.

The largest Christian Church in Africa, fully titled 'Basilique de Notre Dame de la Paix de Yamoussoukro', was built between 1986 and 1989; probably because The Pope didn't journey to Yamoussoukro in 1985, when he made a second visit to Ivory Coast.

Separate quarters were also built for The Pope, who would only use them if money was spent on a hospital for the sick as well. Félix Houphouët-Boigny instigated road building projects for his new capital as well; but many of them lead to nowhere.
