Ireland, Patrick J. Hillery, was made on April 20th.

Another visit to Africa, from April 28th to May 6th, took Pope John
Paul II to Antananarivo, Antsiranana and Fianarantsoa (Madagascar); St. Denis (La Réunion); Lusaka and Kitwe (Zambia); Blantyre and Lilongwe (Malawi).
On May 27th it was the turn of George Herbert Walker Bush
to visit Pope John Paul II; the third President of the United States of America to do so.

From June 1st to June 10th, Pope John Paul II travelled to
Scandinavia, visiting Oslo, Trondheim and Tromsø¸ (Norway); Reykjavik and Thingvellir
(Iceland); Helsinki and Turku
(Finland); Copenhagen and
Roskilde (Denmark); Stockholm,
Uppsala, Vadstena and Linköping (Sweden).

Pope John Paul II's third visit to Spain, from August 19th to August 21st, was planned to
commerate the 4th World Youth Day in Santiago de Compostela.
The Pontiff also visited Ranón, Oviedo, Cangas de Onis and Covadonga.
From September 29th to October 2nd, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr.
Robert Runcie, visited Pope John Paul II in The Vatican. The pair released a joint
statement on October
2nd.

From October 6th to October 10th, Pope John Paul II travelled to Seoul
(South Korea); Jakarta,
Yogyakarta, Maumere, Ritapiret, Díli and Medan (Indonesia; Plaisance, Port Louis,
Le Reduit, Mont Thabor, Plaine Corail, La Ferme, Rodrigues, Rose Hill, Sainte-Croix and
Curepipe (Mauritius).

From January 25th to February 1st, Pope John Paul II visited Isola del
Sale, Praia and Mindelo (Cape
Verde); Bissau and Cumura (Guinea Bissau); Bamako (Mali<); Ouagadougou and Bobo
Dioulasso (Burkina Faso);
N'Djamena, Mondou and Sarh (Chad).

From April 21st to April 22nd, Pope John Paul II visited Prague, Uherské Hradiste, Velehrad
and Bratislava (in what was
then Czechoslavakia).

Back at home, The Pope received the President of Portugal, Mario
Soares, on April 27th; before getting ready to travel abroad again.

From May 6th to May 14th, Pope John Paul II visited Mexico City,
Veracruz, Aguascalientes, S. Juan de los Lagos, Durango, Chihuahua, Monterrey, Tuxtla
Gutiérrez, Villahermosa and Zacatecas (Mexico); and
Willemstad (Curaçao).

Then it was a short trip to the Mediterranean, from May 25th to May
27th, as Pope John Paul II visited Luqa, Valletta, Attard, Mellieha, Cirkewwa, Mgarr,
Ta'Pinu, Victoria, Senglea, Cottonera, St. Julian's, Ta'Qali, Rabat, Tal Virtù, Mdina and
Floriana (Malta).

From September 1st to September 10th, it was Africa again for Pope
John Paul II as he travelled to Dar es Salaam, Songea, Mwanza, Tabora, KIA and Moshi (Tanzania); Bujumbura and Gitega
(Burundi); Kigali and Kabgayi
(Rwanda); and Yamoussoukro (Ivory Coast).
Yamoussoukro Basilica:
Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the long serving president of Côte d'Ivoire, built a massive
church in the style of the Vatican's St Peter's Basilica; on the outskirts of his mother's
village, Yamoussoukro.
The largest Christian Church in Africa, fully titled 'Basilique de
Notre Dame de la Paix de Yamoussoukro', was built between 1986 and 1989; probably because
The Pope didn't journey to Yamoussoukro in 1985, when he made a second visit to Ivory
Coast.
Separate quarters were also built for The Pope, who would only use
them if money was spent on a hospital for the sick as well. Félix Houphouët-Boigny
instigated road building projects for his new capital as well; but many of them lead to
nowhere.
